6 Easy Weekend Getaways From Jacksonville

Collage of weekend getaway destinations from Jacksonville including Savannah, Chattanooga, New York City, and Washington DC

Do you ever feel like you need a vacation, but don’t want to plan a huge week-long trip? Maybe you don’t have the time for a big production right now, or maybe it just isn’t in the budget. That’s where weekend getaways come into play.

Weekend getaways have become some of our favorite resets. Not every trip needs to be a massive vacation to feel meaningful, and sometimes a few days away is all you need to recharge and explore somewhere new.

We’ve put together six of our favorite easy weekend getaways from Jacksonville, ranging from quick road trips to long weekend flights and mountain escapes worth the drive. These are trips we genuinely think work well for people balancing travel with a full-time job.

And even if you don’t live in Jacksonville, many of these trips and ideas are still accessible from a variety of home bases around the Southeast.

If you’re trying to figure out how to travel more consistently while balancing work and everyday life, you can also check out our post on How to Travel More With a Full-Time Job.

Easy No-PTO Road Trips

First up are two of our favorite easy road trips. We’ve loved both of these trips so much that we’ve already done them twice and still keep talking about going back. They’re close enough for a true weekend trip, but still feel like you actually got away for a few days.

Savannah

Savannah feels like stepping into another world. Moss-draped live oaks line the streets, historic homes fill the downtown area and just outside the city you’ll find coastal marshes and the smell of briny saltwater in the air.

At only about a 2.5-hour drive from Jacksonville, Savannah makes an easy weekend getaway. You can leave after work on Friday, stop for dinner on the way up, and still make it in time for an evening ghost tour through the historic district.

One thing we love about Savannah is that you can shape the trip around the kind of weekend you want. If you’re looking for a classic Savannah experience, you can spend most of your time wandering the historic downtown area, touring museums and exploring the city squares. If you prefer nature and quieter scenery, the areas outside downtown offer coastal landscapes, historic forts and some really beautiful state parks. You can also easily mix both styles into one trip.

We personally think 2 days is the perfect amount of time for a Savannah weekend trip, but you could definitely stretch it into 3 days if you want a slower pace or plan to see more of the surrounding area.

A few of our favorite spots in the historic downtown area:

  • Old Town Trolley Tour
  • Webb Military Museum
  • Owens-Thomas House

A few of our favorite spots outside the historic district:

  • Fort McAllister State Park
  • Fort Pulaski National Monument
  • Wormsloe State Historic Site

This only scratches the surface of everything there is to do in Savannah. We go further into depth in our Full Savannah Itinerary.

Atlanta

When most people think of Atlanta, they probably think of the world’s busiest airport, heavy traffic and a city they’re just passing through on the way to somewhere else. But Atlanta actually makes a really fun weekend destination on its own.

The city was home to the 1996 Olympics, has three major league sports teams, an incredible food scene and attractions ranging from museums to one of the largest aquariums in the United States.

At about a 5-hour drive from Jacksonville, Atlanta is a little more of a stretch for a true no-PTO weekend trip compared to Savannah, but we still think it’s worth it. If you leave after work on Friday, you can still make it in time to enjoy dinner or experience some of the city’s nightlife before spending all day Saturday and part of Sunday exploring.

One thing we like about Atlanta is that you can shape the trip around your interests. You can spend the weekend checking out sporting events, concerts, theaters, parks, breweries, or some of the city’s major attractions. On the north side of the metro area, the Chattahoochee River also gives you opportunities to slow things down a bit and spend some time outdoors.

A few of our favorite activities in Atlanta were:

  • Georgia Aquarium
  • World of Coca-Cola
  • Atlanta Botanical Gardens (especially at Christmas time)

Even after visiting twice, Atlanta still feels like a city we’ve barely scratched the surface of.

Quick Flight Long Weekends

Next up are a few destinations that are just a quick direct flight from Jacksonville. These trips are incredibly convenient to get to and are perfect for stretching a normal weekend into something that feels a lot bigger. If you time them around a holiday weekend, some can even work without needing to take PTO.

Washington DC

Located on the East Coast stands our nation’s capital. Steeped in history and meaning, this is a must-do at least once in your life. Memorials and monuments line the National Mall while government buildings stand tall and grand throughout the city.

One thing we loved about DC was how there truly seemed to be a museum for every type of person. Whether you’re into natural history, aviation, art, politics, or American history, you could easily spend days exploring the museums alone. Pair that with a great food scene and even dinner cruises along the Potomac, and there’s no shortage of things to do here.

From Jacksonville, multiple airlines offer quick direct flights to DC in around two hours, making it a surprisingly easy long weekend trip. One of the best parts about visiting is that you really don’t need a rental car. The city’s public transportation system makes it easy to get around, and if you get tired of walking or taking the Metro, there are also bike and scooter rentals throughout the city.

We took an early morning flight and were able to hit the ground running before lunch, which helped us maximize our time there.

Our personal favorite time to visit is late March during cherry blossom season. Seeing the cherry blossoms and tulips in full bloom around the city makes the trip feel even more special, especially if you enjoy gardens and photography.

It’s honestly hard to narrow down just a few highlights, but some of our favorite experiences were:

  • Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History
  • Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
  • Visiting the National Mall at night

As beautiful as DC is, parts of the trip also felt really sobering. Seeing the memorials in person and reflecting on the sacrifices tied to so much of the country’s history gave parts of the city a very different feeling than we expected.

NYC

New York City is one of those places that almost feels impossible to fully describe until you experience it for yourself. The energy of the city, the nonstop movement, the iconic landmarks, and the food scene make it feel like there’s always something happening around you.

Growing up, NYC was always a city I wanted to visit. You see it constantly depicted in movies, TV shows, and pop culture, but actually experiencing the city in person feels completely different. Seeing places like Times Square, Central Park, and the New York skyline for the first time honestly felt surreal.

At only about a 2.5 hour direct flight from Jacksonville, NYC is surprisingly accessible for a long weekend trip. Once you arrive, the city’s walkability and subway system make it easy to explore without needing a car. One minute we were grabbing pizza from a tiny corner shop and the next we were walking through Central Park or catching skyline views from the ferry. It’s the kind of city where you can fit a lot into a short trip without feeling like you’ve run out of things to do

No matter where we were in the city, it felt like there was always something happening; street performers, packed restaurants, late-night food spots, or another iconic landmark around the next corner.

Some of our favorite experiences in NYC were:

  • Comedy Cellar
  • Exploring the history of Ellis Island
  • Catching a game at Yankee Stadium

Between the quick flight and the endless number of things to do, this is a destination we already know we’ll be returning to over and over again.

Mountain Escapes Worth the Drive

Sometimes the road trip itself becomes part of the experience. If you’re looking for mountain views, scenic drives, and cooler weather without paying for flights, these two destinations are absolutely worth the extra time in the car. Both trips gave us the perfect mix of outdoor adventure and relaxing downtown areas to explore in the evenings.

Asheville

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, Asheville is the perfect mix of outdoor adventure, scenic drives, and a vibrant downtown atmosphere. The famous Blue Ridge Parkway, often considered one of the most scenic drives in the country, gives visitors easy access to countless hiking trails, waterfalls, and mountain views. Meanwhile, the iconic Biltmore Estate offers incredible architecture, beautiful grounds, and a glimpse into America’s Gilded Age history. Add in Asheville’s thriving art and food scene, and the city manages to feel both adventurous and relaxing at the same time.

I originally chose Asheville because I wanted a fall getaway to see the leaves changing and finally experience the Biltmore Estate in person. But once I started planning the trip, I quickly realized how much more Asheville and the surrounding area had to offer.

A 6.5-hour road trip may not sound like everyone’s idea of a relaxing weekend, but I promise it’s worth every minute. We used Asheville as our home base while exploring the surrounding mountains, waterfalls, and nearby towns, and it ended up being the perfect setup. During the day, we could easily drive to hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and apple orchards. In the evenings, we’d head back into town for dinner and explore Asheville’s lively downtown area.

While we aren’t huge craft beer drinkers ourselves, Asheville is well known for its brewery scene if that’s something you enjoy.

Some of our favorite experiences included:

  • Touring the Biltmore Estate
  • Chasing waterfalls throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains
  • Scenic drives along the Blue Ridge Parkway
  • Apple picking at Grandad’s Apples (if you visit during apple season!)

Asheville ended up being so much more than just a fall foliage trip for us, and it’s still one of our favorite mountain getaways we’ve taken.

Chattanooga

Chattanooga is probably the most underrated destination on this list. Growing up, I passed through Chattanooga several times on family road trips and always loved the scenery driving through the area. There’s a stretch near downtown where the mountains rise up on one side while the river winds through the city on the other, and it always stood out to me.

Once we finally decided to spend a weekend there ourselves, we realized how much the city actually has to offer beyond just being a stop along the interstate. At around a 7-hour drive from Jacksonville, Chattanooga is a little farther than some of the other trips on this list, but we still found it very manageable for a long weekend. We spent 3 days there and felt like it gave us a great mix of outdoor activities, downtown exploring, and time to slow down a bit.

We also happened to time our visit perfectly with peak fall color, which made the mountain views and riverfront even more beautiful. If you enjoy scenic drives, caves, hiking, or just being outdoors in general, Chattanooga is hard to beat.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed the food scene in downtown Chattanooga. We left dinner every night saying, “Wow, that was amazing.” One unexpectedly fun stop after dinner was the Classic Arcade Pinball Museum, where you can spend hours playing classic arcade and pinball games.

Our favorite activities in Chattanooga were:

  • Southern Belle Riverboat
  • Raccoon Mountain Caverns
  • Lookout Mountain

Chattanooga ended up being one of those places that made us wonder why more people don’t talk about it.

Final Thoughts

One of the biggest things we’ve learned is that some of our favorite travel memories have come from quick weekend getaways and long weekends that fit realistically into everyday life.

Whether you’re looking for a quick road trip, a city escape, or a mountain getaway, we hope this list gave you a few ideas for your next trip. And honestly, one of the best parts about living in Jacksonville is how many incredible destinations are within reach for a weekend adventure.
