New River Gorge National Park has quickly become one of our favorite long weekend destinations. Between scenic overlooks, hiking trails, waterfalls, whitewater rafting, coal mining history, and the iconic New River Gorge Bridge, there’s enough here to keep almost any traveler busy for several days.
One thing that surprised us while planning our trip was how spread out everything is. The park stretches for more than 50 miles along the New River, and many of the most popular attractions are located in different sections of the park. Where you choose to stay can make a big difference in how much time you spend driving each day.

Fayetteville
Best for: Visitors who want to stay closest to New River Gorge’s most popular attractions.
Fayetteville is one of the most popular places to stay when visiting New River Gorge. Known as the gateway to the park, it puts you just minutes from many of the area’s most popular hikes, overlooks, and adventure activities, including the New River Gorge Bridge, Endless Wall Trail, and Bridge Walk.
The tradeoff is that Fayetteville is a smaller town, so you’ll find fewer hotels and restaurants than in nearby Beckley. It also has fewer accommodations overall, so hotels and vacation rentals tend to book up quickly during spring, fall, and holiday weekends. If you’re visiting in the spring, fall, or over a holiday weekend, it’s a good idea to reserve your stay well in advance.
From Fayetteville, you’re about 5 minutes from the bridge area, 40 minutes from Grandview, and around 1 hour and 15 minutes from Sandstone Falls.

Adventures on the Gorge (Unique Stay)
If you’re looking for more than just a place to sleep, Adventures on the Gorge is one of the area’s most unique lodging options. Choose from cabins, vacation homes, or lodge rooms, all within a large outdoor adventure resort offering ziplining, whitewater rafting, restaurants, and incredible views of the gorge.
Quality Inn New River Gorge (Best Budget Option)
For travelers looking to keep costs down, the Quality Inn is a great value. It includes free breakfast and offers a comfortable, budget-friendly base just a short drive from New River Gorge’s most popular attractions.
Beckley
Best for: Visitors looking for more hotel, restaurant, and shopping options while still being within easy driving distance of the park.
Beckley is the largest town near New River Gorge and offers the widest selection of hotels, chain restaurants, grocery stores, and other conveniences. While you’ll be a little farther from the bridge area than if you stayed in Fayetteville, the extra amenities and lodging options can make it a great home base—especially for longer stays or travelers who prefer familiar hotel brands.
We stayed in Beckley during our trip and would absolutely recommend it as a home base. It offered plenty of dining options after a day of hiking and made it easy to explore multiple areas of the park without feeling like we were constantly driving.
From Beckley, you’re about 30 minutes from the bridge area, 20 minutes from Grandview, and around 1 hour from Sandstone Falls.

This modern hotel offers comfortable rooms, complimentary breakfast, and a convenient location near restaurants and shopping. It’s an excellent choice if you’re looking for a reliable stay with easy access to both New River Gorge and Beckley’s amenities.
Fairfield Inn & Suites Beckley (Great Mid-Range Option)
Another solid choice that includes free breakfast, Fairfield Inn offers spacious rooms and a convenient location close to I-64 and I-77. It’s a comfortable option for visitors planning to spend several days exploring the national park.
Cabin Rentals
Best for: Travelers looking for a peaceful, scenic stay surrounded by nature.
One of the things that originally inspired us to visit New River Gorge was seeing a beautiful cabin on social media. We ended up spending part of our trip in a cozy cabin along a peaceful creek, and it was one of the most relaxing parts of our vacation.
The only downside was that our cabin was located farther from the park than we realized, which meant spending quite a bit of time driving each day (1.5 hours each way). While the scenic mountain roads were beautiful, we’d recommend choosing a cabin closer to Fayetteville or Beckley if you plan to spend most of your trip exploring New River Gorge. You’ll still get that secluded, woodsy experience while cutting down on drive time to the park’s top attractions.
Many of the best cabins are tucked into the mountains outside the park, so before booking, be sure to check drive times to the attractions you plan to visit.

Riverfront Cabin (Best for a Peaceful Getaway)
If you’re looking to unwind after a day of hiking, this riverfront cabin offers a quiet setting surrounded by nature. It’s a great option for couples or anyone wanting a relaxing retreat with beautiful views.
Cozy Cabin Near New River Gorge (Best Traditional Cabin Stay)
This cabin offers the classic mountain getaway experience, with the privacy and wooded setting many travelers picture when planning a trip to West Virginia. It’s an excellent choice if you’re looking for a more immersive stay than a traditional hotel.
Our Recommendation
If it’s your first visit to New River Gorge, we’d recommend staying in Beckley. While Fayetteville puts you closer to the bridge area and some of the park’s most popular attractions, we found Beckley’s central location made it easier to explore multiple sections of the park. We also appreciated having more hotel, restaurant, and grocery options after long days of hiking.
If being as close to the bridge as possible is your top priority, Fayetteville is still an excellent choice. But for most first-time visitors, we think Beckley offers the best overall balance of convenience, amenities, and value.
